Right Makes Might Project
Right Brain Phobia
Right Brain Phobia is
an exaggerated, inexplicable and illogical fear of the emotional and creative side of our talents. A fear of applying creativity, empathy and humor talents to work tasks.
Symptoms of Right Brain Phobia at Work include, but are not limited to:
- Internally focused meetings and tasks taking priority over customer focused and sales enabling activities
- Restructuring or Re-organization within 18 months of the last restructure and re-organization
- Brand re-launches every 18-24 months
- Customers endlessly demand you learn their business
- Cross functional initiatives fail to meet their objectives or consistently miss milestones
- Thought leadership activities rarely gain traction
- Tension between Sales & The Rest of the Company
- Complaints from Sales & Channels about lack of, or lame, Value Propositions & Customer Messaging
- Missed/Delayed product and program launches
- Risk Aversion
- Slow decision making
- Endless parade of consultants down the executive corridor
- We know we're one of them...
Why is it so Insidious?
Business Books are big money! We gobble them up before the ink is dry desperately searching for the panacea for mediocre corporate performance. Yet it seems within a few years of each Bestseller's rocket ride to fame, the companies heralded in its pages as having the perfect formula for success are struggling. The magic formula doesn't work so well after all.
The reality is we all know, deep down, there is no magic pill we can take to become our industry's leader. We know success boils down to an intelligent strategy, focused execution and a splash of good fortune.
What we forget, is that all three success factors are fluid. Today's strategy may not be the right path next year. Our execution priorities may shift. Fortune may dance with us this quarter, but take the competition home.
To effectively deal with this ever changing world, we need our all faculties. We cannot be handicapped by a reliance on only one way of thinking and problem solving. Solutions in a dynamic world come from flexibility and creativity.
We must not only develop, but learn to value, the creative, intuitive, empathetic and playful side of ourselves and our businesses.
Why is it so hard? Because the Right Brain is our softer side. For most of the last century, we've neglected it in favor of hard science and analytics. Our amazing growth & prosperity came from logic oriented technology advancements.
It's a new world now - even in technology! Now, the focus is on technology enabling creativity, social networks, collaboration and personal growth. We did the logic thing and found it wanting.
Now, as a people, we want to connect. Business will be about enabling broader and deeper connections.
It's the Right Side of our Brains that will deliver Competitive Might.
